Omega-3: A Must for Smokers?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S., and in the UK alone, it accounts for over 25,000 deaths every year. It is estimated that over a million Brits currently have the disease.

According to the latest statistics, the number of patients with COPD worldwide is increasingand there are no medical treatments to stop the disease from progressing.

Current “therapies” can help to reduce the symptoms but they do nothing to counteract the damage done, let alone offer any sort of cure or recovery. Such therapies include bronchodilators and steroids but even with them, patients with COPD still suffer greatly fromcoughing, shortness of breath, infective exacerbations and even death. Medical experts agree: There is a great unmet need for new therapies.

Existing research has already shown that these compounds (called pro-resolving lipid mediators), have a significant anti-inflammatory effect on human lung cells and can actuallySTOP cigarette smoke-induced lung damage.

They are thought to do this in 2 ways:

  • by turning off the inflammation signals caused by irritants entering the airways
  • by promoting the destruction of the inflamed cells that take over lung tissue following smoking

The scientists leading this study believe that the active ingredients in Omega-3 have the potential to be one of the first-ever “disease modifying” therapies against smoking-induced inflammatory lung disease. This includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, the two conditions which characterise COPD.

Researchers are hoping that the therapeutic effects of Omega-3 will also apply to COPD caused by other irritants.

It is estimated that up to 15% of COPD is likely to be work-related, with around 4,000 COPD deaths each year in the UK from workplace exposures, including various dusts (coal, cotton, grain, flour, silica, and wood) as well as certain fumes and chemicals (welding fume, isocyanates, cadmium, vanadium, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons).

Of course this theory will require further research to prove it, but logic posits that the anti-inflammatory effects of Omega-3 shown to help COPD would have equally healing effects regardless of the cause.

Many experts agree that Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential building block of the brain and are necessary for healthy brain development in children.

Because of this potential, studies are cropping up all over the world to substantiate these claims.

For example, scientists at the University of Wales gave Omega-3 supplements to 184 children (15- and 16-year-olds) at a Lancashire secondary school. This was part of a 12-week study on the effects of Omega-3 on academic performance.

According to the online edition of the Daily Mail, these children took the supplements in the run up to their GCSE’s (general certificate of secondary examination) last year and accounted for an impressive 26% improvement in exam results!

On average, the children who had Omega-3 added to their diets exceeded the results predicted for them by one whole grade, with a total of 34% passing with a C or higher, compared with only 27% previously.

Omega 3 is considered an “essential nutrient” because it is NOT manufactured by the body and must therefore be supplied from our diet. Yet – as you may recall from our last letter, our Western diets are significantly deficient in Omega-3. This deficiency has been linked to most of the deadly “lifestyle” diseases we face today, including brain dysfunction.

In September 2014, the BBC Science online homepage highlighted a study being conducted on more than 100 children from 12 schools in Durham. The children were required to take a course of Omega-3 capsules for a period of 6 months.

During the study, the children were subjected to regular tests to measure their:

  • concentration

Although the results have yet to be published, they are expected to show a “statistically significant improvement in school performance in the group of children given Omega 3 supplements.”

Elliot is one of the children in the study and his story is cited in the BBC article. According to his mother, “His reading jumped 18 months [over the trial period]. He’s just a lot more interested in everything. He’s even developed an interest in classical music”.

According to Dr Alex Richardson, a senior research fellow in physiology at the University of Oxford who conducted the trials in Durham:

“Omega 3s can improve brain function at the very simplest level, by improving blood flow.”

Such exciting results across the globe are leading to more and more studies, like this one, which is currently under way in the USA.

Omega-3 for Focus and
Academic Performance in our Children

As of January this year, a study of students in a US school is being conducted to track how Omega-3 affects student focus and academic performance.

Over the next 8 weeks, children aged 11 – 14 at SKY Academy, Florida will eat one cookie a day, which is enriched with 1,000mg of EPA/DHA Omega-3 fatty acids (the equivalent of one teaspoon of cod liver oil).

At the beginning and end of the study, students will be measured for their concentration, and a comparison of academic performance in mathematics will be assessed relative to their peers who are not part of the study.

We will keep you posted on the results of this trial, but either way, the fact that so much effort and expense is being invested into researching the effects of Omega-3 in children and adolescents – with profound and exciting results so far – strongly supports the argument for supplementing our children’s diets from an early age.

Concerns over the First Genetically Modified Omega 3 Crops

In a few short weeks the first Omega-3 enriched crops will be harvested in Rothamsted Research, in England. This ground-breaking trial is the first of its kind as the crops are being grown outdoors, rather than in greenhouses, and have been genetically modified.

The plant, which is a crop of Camelina – or False Flax – has been implanted with genes which produce Omega-3 in order that the seeds will be rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, something usually found in fish. Should the trial be a success, there is talk of feeding the crops to fish to boost their Omega-3 content, turning it into a supplement, or adding it to products such as oils and yoghurts.

Head of this GM project is Professor Jonathan Napier, who explains why this trial is so important: “Fish get omega 3 from their diet when they swim in the sea but when you put them in a cage they can’t do that and you have to feed them smaller fish, otherwise fish would have no more Omega-3 in them than chicken.”

As the Professor said, it is difficult for farmed fish to get sufficient Omega-3 in their diet, as they do not have access to the necessary algae meaning that even more fish have to be captured in order for the bigger fish to eat them and absorb their Omega-3. As the Camelina has genes that have been duplicated from this algae, when fed to bigger farm fish it cuts out the needs for smaller fish to be taken from the ocean.

“The problem is that there aren’t plenty of fish in the sea. One million tons of fish for oil is removed from the seas every year and most of that goes into fish farming through fishmeal. It’s simply unsustainable.”

On the face of it, this trial seem good, however there are concerns that Omega-3 produced by GM crops is not necessarily safe for human consumption. Liz O’Neill, the director of GM Freeze stated: “The hazards are enormous.”

This complex trial involves adjusting seven different genes in the plant in order to produce Omega-3, making it the “most sophisticated GM experiment anywhere in the world,” according to Professor Napier.

At the end of this month, the crop will be harvested and the seeds removed from the pods. They will then undergo oil extraction and testing to check both that Omega-3 has been produced and that the quantity is good enough to warrant continuing. The results of which should be available by the time the year draws to a close.

Professor Napier reiterates, “This a taxpayer funded study so it is important that the taxpayers know what we are up to.”

Next year, a second trail of twice the size is expected to arise, the last trail before the plants will be grown on a commercial scale. That is, if enough Omega-3 is produced, of course.

While these crops are the first of their kind and will help tackle overfishing, they are genetically engineered with associated concerns.  “We are what we eat”

Jokes aside – a fruitarian diet is actually, a form of veganism where people eat only fruits, seeds and nuts that can be derived from plants without killing it, such as apples and oranges. Carrots and potatoes, however, are off the list.
