Omega-3: A Must for Smokers?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S., and in the UK alone, it accounts for over 25,000 deaths every year. It is estimated that over a million Brits currently have the disease.

According to the latest statistics, the number of patients with COPD worldwide is increasingand there are no medical treatments to stop the disease from progressing.

Current “therapies” can help to reduce the symptoms but they do nothing to counteract the damage done, let alone offer any sort of cure or recovery. Such therapies include bronchodilators and steroids but even with them, patients with COPD still suffer greatly fromcoughing, shortness of breath, infective exacerbations and even death. Medical experts agree: There is a great unmet need for new therapies.

for New COPD Treatments

Numerous studies have shown the dramatic effects of Omega-3 on many pulmonary diseases – including:

They are thought to do this in 2 ways:

  • by promoting the destruction of the inflamed cells that take over lung tissue following smoking

Of course this theory will require further research to prove it, but logic posits that the anti-inflammatory effects of Omega-3 shown to help COPD would have equally healing effects regardless of the cause.

Many experts agree that Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential building block of the brain and are necessary for healthy brain development in children.

Because of this potential, studies are cropping up all over the world to substantiate these claims.

For example, scientists at the University of Wales gave Omega-3 supplements to 184 children (15- and 16-year-olds) at a Lancashire secondary school. This was part of a 12-week study on the effects of Omega-3 on academic performance.

According to the online edition of the Daily Mail, these children took the supplements in the run up to their GCSE’s (general certificate of secondary examination) last year and accounted for an impressive 26% improvement in exam results!

On average, the children who had Omega-3 added to their diets exceeded the results predicted for them by one whole grade, with a total of 34% passing with a C or higher, compared with only 27% previously.

Omega 3 is considered an “essential nutrient” because it is NOT manufactured by the body and must therefore be supplied from our diet. Yet – as you may recall from our last letter, our Western diets are significantly deficient in Omega-3. This deficiency has been linked to most of the deadly “lifestyle” diseases we face today, including brain dysfunction.

Elliot is one of the children in the study and his story is cited in the BBC article. According to his mother, “His reading jumped 18 months [over the trial period]. He’s just a lot more interested in everything. He’s even developed an interest in classical music”.

According to Dr Alex Richardson, a senior research fellow in physiology at the University of Oxford who conducted the trials in Durham:

“Omega 3s can improve brain function at the very simplest level, by improving blood flow.”

Such exciting results across the globe are leading to more and more studies, like this one, which is currently under way in the USA.

Omega-3 for Focus and
Academic Performance in our Children

As of January this year, a study of students in a US school is being conducted to track how Omega-3 affects student focus and academic performance.

Over the next 8 weeks, children aged 11 – 14 at SKY Academy, Florida will eat one cookie a day, which is enriched with 1,000mg of EPA/DHA Omega-3 fatty acids (the equivalent of one teaspoon of cod liver oil).

At the beginning and end of the study, students will be measured for their concentration, and a comparison of academic performance in mathematics will be assessed relative to their peers who are not part of the study.
