Frequently Asked Questions

Vegetarian - Vegan Omega 3 Capsules by Nuique

  1. What is Nuique EPA & DHA?

Nuique EPA & DHA is the purest dose of pure algae Omega 3, it's unadulterated providing a massive 100mg EPA and 400mg DHA per 2 capsule daily dose / 60 capsules per bottle, 1 months supply.

There are many Omega 3 supplements out there, yet many are bulked with other Omega PUFA's such as Omega 6 in the form of sunflower oil or other high omega 6 oils such as olive oil. Omega 6 is abundant in many diets across the world and can be detrimental to your health as it counteracts the absorption of the Omega 3.

Nuique is now the first choice when choosing a non-fish Omega 3 direct from the source; Algae. The best choice in sustainability and always manufactured in a controlled environment.

Our high dose DHA makes it the number one choice for pregnant or breast feeding mums and best for baby too by squeezing the oil directly into their milk once moved onto the bottle.

  2. What the differnce between each Nuique product?

The difference is the concentration levels, the product on the right of the front page of our website contains 10mg EPA & 400mg DHA per 2 capsule dose. It's also an algae alternative to fish oil which provides a pure, natural form of vegan Omega 3. The product on the left of the page is 100mg EPA and 400mg DHA per daily dose.

  3. What are the benefits of NUIQUE Omega 3 with EPA & DHA?

NUIQUE's new omega 3 supplement contains high levels of EPA & DHA, 500mg, the active ingredients only found in oily fish and algae. It's naturally low in Omega 6 and saturated fats and we don't add additional Omega 6 in the form of Sunflower oil or Sunflower lecithin.

We feel it's about time the lid is lifted on supplements that boast of 'a complete Omega 3' or 'Omega 3,6,9' or stating 1000mg Omega 3 when only 400mg are EPA/DHA, what's the rest in the capsule?? Many consumers are fooled into thinking they are getting a superior Omega 3 product.

Why should I just take pure Omega 3 EPA & DHA and not Omega 3,6 & 9?

It's very simple and straightforward yet can be the source of confusion to many people.

A lot of people think if they are taking Omega 3,6,9 that they are taking a more 'complete' Omega.

Omega 9, the human body can make itself , so you dont need any extra.

And 100 years ago people died from omega 6 deficiency, that's no longer the case today. Omega 6 although essential for survival is abundant within a variety of foods we eat. Here are just a few foods with high amounts of omega 6 fats:

French fries, Sunflower oil, Corn oils, all oils, nuts, seeds, cakes crisps/ chips, fried chicken, fried foods, red meat, snack bars, milk /eggs, cakes. Even olive oil contains 12% OM6!

What is important to remember is the balance between Omega 3 and Omega 6.

Too much Omega 6 is detrimental to the absorption of Omega 3 and has a negative effect on your health.

The ratio should be around 1:1 to 4:1 (Omega 6 to Omega 3) but in typical Western diets it can be anything from around a staggering 50:1 in favour of the Omega 6, which would account for the rise in obesity and heart disease amongst many other conditions. The Western diets contain far too much omega 6, so you really don't need to take any more in supplement form.

Why take Omega 6 with Omega 3 when they compete with each other for absorption within the body? Omega 6 always wins. You may as well not bother with an Omega 3 at all, it's just money down the drain.

Too much Omega 6 will only go into storing in the body where we don't want it, around the stomach in most cases!

Where does Omega 3 store? In the brain, eyes and heart.

    Omega 3 versus Omega 6

There are many differences between Omega 3 and Omega 6, for instance:

    Omega 3:
    - kick starts the metabolism
    - reduces fat cells
    - activates the body to burn fat
    - can only store in small amounts

Conversely, Omega 6 offers the following:
    - reduces the metabolism
    - boots bigger fat cells
    - activates the body to store fat
    - stores in substantial amounts.

Humans cannot manufacture long chain Omega 3 EPA & DHA, they have to get it from their diet by consuming either oily fish or an algae oil supplement.

Algae are the source of long chain essential fatty acids (PUFA's) and fish obtain Omega 3 from their diet of algae. When we created Nuique Vegan omega 3, we went straight to the source and bypassed the fish.

The future without question, should be algae derived Omega 3, why? It's pure, unadulterated and 100% natural, great for all the family, and is especially important for expectant and breastfeeding mothers. NUIQUE OM3 is guaranteed to be free of toxins, heavy metals and PCB's because it's grown in a controlled pharmaceutical grade facility, away from the sea. Therefore customers can be sure of the highest quality and purity of our algae oil without having to take a fish oil.

NUIQUE EPA & DHA Vegan/Vegetarian Omega 3, is naturally low in omega 6 with no added Sunflower oil or Sunflower lecithin, delivering a whopping 100 mg EPA & 400mg Omega 3 per 2 capsule, easy to swallow, daily dose.

  5. Omega 3 for all the family - mothers, baby, children, adults and the elderly.

An Omega 3 supplment can work for all the family

    • Developing foetus, for eye and brain development
    • Conceiving mothers, expectant mothers
    • Everyone for keeping joints supple
    • New born babies for brain and eye development
    • Children through to teenagers, studies show increased attention span and calmed behaviour
    • Elderly, studies show reduction in dementia and increase in eye preservation
    • Studies show increase in cardiovascular health and protection against heart disease

If you knew that 45% of our brain was made up of DHA, one of the essential long chain Omega 3 fatty acids and that EPA its fellow counterpart, was responsible for lowering cholesterol plus a number of many other health benefits, we would want to ensure that every member of the family from a developing foetus right through to our elder family members got as much of it as they possibly could.

Even though we need these essential fatty acids for development, it’s surprising the human body cannot synthesise these - we have to get it from other sources. Traditionally this has had to come from fish as it was only in recent years determined that fish don’t actually make their own DHA and EPA either. So where do fish get their Omega 3 from?

The truth is that fish get their Omega 3 from rich sources of algae. So whilst fish has historically been a good source of Omega 3 one has to think about the quality, quantity and purity of the Omega 3 from fish oils. It’s a worrying fact that as well as fish stocks being depleted, that consuming fish more than perhaps twice weekly may actually do more harm than good.

We know for a fact that fish contain harmful levels of heavy metals and in particular mercury along with PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls) or dioxin contaminants, of which these can be harmful to a developing foetus as well as for the expectant mum if consumed in high doses.

By bypassing the fish itself and going straight to the most natural source of EPA and DHA – Algae - it ensures the most pure form of Omega 3 is produced. Grown in organically controlled conditions you therefore know and have the reassurance that you’re taking something 100% safe.

Who should take it? All the family of course! Even before you start a family whilst trying to conceive, right the way through pregnancy with the third trimester being very important as this is the time the brain and eyes are in full development. The developing foetus gains all the DHA through the placenta. After birth the baby relies on this continued development by getting this through the mother’s breast milk, this is why essential diet is of the most importance before, during and after pregnancy.

  6. Doses, storage & consumption

    Doses
    Pregnant mums 450-500mg per day
    Adults - 450 to 500mg per day.
Babies – 125-150mg per day (pierce a capsule and add 1/2 of oil to food).
    Children - 200mg per day

Warning: Avoid giving babies and small children capsules as they may find them difficult to swallow.

    Storage
Omega-3 can be affected by air, light, heat & humidity. Once encapsulated it is very stable at room temperature and can be stored in a cupboard. If you live in a hot climate such as the Middle East and plan to store the bottles for long periods you can always put the bottles in the fridge. Refrigeration won’t cause any harm to the oil whatsoever.

    Consumption
It’s best to take the capsules after a meal to help with the digestion of the oil. You can also pierce a capsule and take orally or add to oily foods such as yoghurt or nuts.

Warning: Avoid giving babies and small children capsules as they may find them difficult to swallow.

  7. Allergies and food intolerance

Nuique's EPA & DHA omega-3 capsules are FREE from:
    Sunflower oil or Sunflower lecithin
    Gluten Wheat
    All animal products and by-products
    Artificial preservative and colours
    GMO ingredients

Contains Soy derived Vitamin E (added as a natural antioxidant and perservative).
  8. Cloudiness – particles within the oil

There is no need to worry about any cloudiness within the capsules - it’s perfectly normal and caused by some of the naturally occurring oils solidifying at different temperatures. The quality, effectiveness and safety have not been compromised in any way.
  9. Long chain Omega 3 or flaxseed oil – you decide?

Not all omega 3 oils are equal, in fact, there are many differences between flaxseed oil, evening primrose and Chia oils (all short chain ALA) and long chain omega-3 oil (EPA and DHA). Many manufacturers in recent year’s have added short chain (ALA) to their products yet like to make all the claims that only purport to being long chain Omega-3 (EPA, DHA).

Short chain ALA is a bad converter to long chain omega-3 (EPA, DHA). In fact, there’s practically no conversion of ALA to DHA and very little ALA to EPA. Factors that also effect conversion are smoking, drinking, fitness and how much omega 6 is within your body.
  10. Why algae oil supplements and not fish oil supplements?

In recent years our seas and fish have become polluted. Many people have been told by their doctors to stop eating fish as it playing havoc with their health. It’s particularly problematic for women wishing to get pregnant due to heavy metal contamination; many fish are polluted by PCB’s, heavy metals and toxins, the larger the fish, the bigger the problem. In order to be completely sure when taking an omega-3 supplement, opt for our Nuique algae supplements. Our supplement is grown in controlled conditions away from the sea so it doesn’t impact on fish stocks or the food they eat. There are no heavy metals or contaminants within our algal oil, making it the purest and most natural form of EPA and DHA.

Nuique EPA & DHA Omega Capsules are:
    - Made from a sustainable resource - algae
    - 100% free of toxins, heavy metals and contaminates
    - The purest and most natural form of long chain omega-3
    - Vegan and vegetarian approved – no animal ingredients whatsoever
  11. How do you keep the oil from oxidising?

Every step of the manufacturing process is controlled from the initial production of algae to the storage and encapsulation of the oil, so you can be sure of the quality of the oil and its active ingredients. When stored and encapsulated the oil is flushed under a nitrogen blanket to prevent air from interfering with the oil. Vitamin E is also added as a natural preservative and anti-oxidant and the capsules are also air bubble free.
  12. What are EPA and DHA?

EPA DHA are long chain, essential fatty acids. EPA stands for eicosapentaenoic acid & DHA for docosahexaenoic acid. This essential fatty acid is an Omega 3 fat, which is found in algae and cold water fish. EPA DHA are highly unsaturated fats because they contain 6 and 5 double bonds on their long structural chain. These polyunsaturated fats play a very important role with the function of our bodies.

EPA and DHA are vital nutrients and may be taken to maintain healthy function of the following:

    - Brain and Retina - DHA is a building block of tissue in the brain and the retina of the eye. It helps with forming neural transmitters, such as phosphatidylserine, which is important for brain function. DHA is found in the retina of the eye and taking DHA may be necessary for maintaining healthy levels of DHA for normal eye function.

    - Cardiovascular system - EPA and DHA are converted into hormone like substances called prostaglandins and they regulate cell activity and healthy cardiovascular function.

    - Human growth and intellectual development - DHA plays a very important role during fetal development, early infancy, and old age. High concentrations of DHA are found in the brain and increases 300-500% in an infant's brain during the last trimester of pregnancy. Adding DHA to a pregnant mothers diet may be beneficial for the fetus's brain development. Elderly people should also take EPA DHA, because as we get older, our bodies form less DHA and EPA, which may cause less mental focus and cognitive function. Taking EPA DHA may also help with mental abnormalities, such as Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. Please see the benefits and case studies 2). above

There are other benefits to taking EPA and DHA because it also plays as a source of energy, it insulates the body against heat loss, prevents skin from drying and flaking, and cushions tissues and organs.

Who should take EPA & DHA? Everyone can benefit from taking EPA and DHA.
  13. Pets and Omega 3

Algal oil is great for pets, just pierce a capsule and add some oil to their food or just add the capsules if they are able to eat them whole. It's especially good for skin conditions and joint health. You’ll should see results within a couple of weeks.
  14. Don’t take Omega 3 if

You are taking any blood thinning drugs such as Warfarin always speak to your Doctor first.

Further Information on Omega-3s

Where those healthy Omega 3 Long Chain Fatty Acids come from

Long chain omega-3 fatty acids are the stuff that brains and the retina of the eye are made of. About a third of the substance of brain contains omega 3s such as DHA and EPA. Retina contains even more. Each day we lose some because, as well as keeping our heads together, Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can be burned as fuel like other fats.

The difference between Saturated, Unsaturated, and Hydrogenated Fats

Lipids (fats) which provide us with a concentrated form of energy are made up of fatty acids. The molecules they are made from, have chains of carbon atoms of varying lengths. They can be metabolised ('burnt') in the body to provide heat and energy, and eventually leave our bodies as carbon dioxide. All lipids, whether they are saturated (hard fats) or unsaturated, like food oils can provide energy, but some, the unsaturated fats have other functions as well. That is why unsaturates are called essential fatty acids. Just like vitamins they are essential for health.

Comparing Omega 3 to Omega 6 and 9

There is no doubt about the need for Omega fatty acids in a healthy diet. In particular, we need a regular supply of omega 3s because they are what nervous tissue, most importantly in the brain and retina, are made of. Not all omega 3s are the same so what is the difference?
